Nintendo Switch 2: Too Big for old Accessories?
The Nintendo Switch 2 made it’s debut. I remember writing about the Nintendo Wii U, what it potentially looks like, and being completely wrong. This time, it’s not just speculation or a leak. It’s an official release from Nintendo.
I wasn’t going to weigh in on this until I had some specs. Just like other Switch owners, I have Nintendo Switch accessories for the o.g. version of Switch. I wanted to see if I could cheese the accessories industry and use the same old accessories I have. Mostly for the Joy-Con grips case by Mumba . This grips case became a must whenever playing Switch with others. Of course, I have a pro controller, but not multiple. These make the Joy-Con bearable to hold and are a comfort to any size hands.
The entire system is bigger with a minimalist design. The red and blue strips are on the ends of the controller covering the triggers. They disappear when the Joy-Con are attached. These new Joy-Con no longer slide and clip, they connect. We’re all speculating that they’re magnetized and that’s how they clip on. During my research about the Switch, I stumbled across this video.
It talks about the Joy-Con having a failure point. A failure point is a design flaw or risk comprising a circuit or system. If the connectors get bent backward, potentially, it’ll take a pair of pliers to get them back into place. That’s the best-case scenario. The speculation is, the connectors bending will incapacitate the entire device. It's way bigger than the Joy-Con drift. If this does create a problem, I hope they’d offer to fix it, like the drift issue.
Remembering the variations of the Wii until Switch debuted, it’s a pattern. Four types of Wii, not including different color designs, although the Nintendo Wii 24k Gold Royal Wii is a true collection piece.
Wii:
Standard Colors: Initially available in white, with later releases in black, red, and blue.
Special Editions: Included limited editions like the red Wii released for Mario's 25th anniversary.
Wii U:
Standard Colors: Primarily available in black and white.
Special Editions: Bundles such as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Set, which featured a black console with 32 GB of storage and a copy of Mario Kart 8
There are two types of Wii with different types of variations. There are also three types of Nintendo Switch: Original, Lite, and OLED, plus the variations with IPs like Animal Crossing, etc.
The Wii started off being compatible with GameCube games. We see the Nintendo Switch 2 is going to have exclusive games and not all Nintendo Switch games will be playable through it. With the Nintendo Online’s archive, maybe this won’t be as a big deal. I don’t see them leaving recent Zelda IPs. But definitely getting a new Mario and Super Smash Bros, the money makers.
All in all, I am burnt out on console releases and moving onto next gen so quickly. The first Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. We are eight years out. However, the Xbox Series X Refresh released Oct 15, 2024. I’m still holding on to the Xbox One so I can use my Kinect! I’m hoping a console gets released that will be compatible with games like Just Dance. I’m aware of PlayStation having their camera. It’s more spacially acceptable than Kinect, but it just doesn’t feel right.
Which games do you hope are compatible with this version of Nintendo Switch?
