I moved to Finland in December 2023 and immediately started networking to find anybody. I knew nobody when I moved. Maybe a few people I’ve interviewed for the documentary. Oh yeah, did you know about the documentary? No, keep up. I’ll give some more insight later. But not one person I could call. I utilized Facebook groups before my move to assist with research. Host A Sister became a vital Facebook group for me. This group allows women to travel around the world by providing places to stay in exchange for social capital. Finding this group helped me get started in Finland. She hosted me until I found an apartment. It took me about two weeks to find a place. Again, thanks to the Facebook group for housing in Finland. Anywhoo, I say this to preface the podcast where I explained what it took to get to Finland. I talked a little bit about my time there.
Denise Wall, a fellow Caribbean woman now located in Finland, hosts a podcast featuring expats in Finland; Finland Through A Looking Glass. We linked up to talk about business and she asked me to be a guest. I wouldn’t refuse. She’s a wonderful person to talk to. Also, it’s not often you meet a Trini person in Finland! We chatted about my first impressions and the residency permit journey.
When I found out that I didn’t get my residency permit, I knew I wanted to wrap up the cliffhanger that was our podcast episode with a final episode. Now, I’m happy to present, a double feature I call: To Finland and Back.
And don’t forget to listen to this one.
