Xbox and PlayStation About to Place Ads in Free to Play Games
Remember when Netflix was just thinking about placing ads in their platform? Well, gaming is on board.
The conversation of adding ads to free Xbox and PlayStation games is over three years old. Now we know, we can expect ads between July and September 2024.
There’s a little bit of history with Microsoft already placing ads into games. Can’t really pin down a time frame and I ain’t never played them games. The reason being is, gamers are the hardest to reach because of new media. Remember when Super Smash Bros had a cartoon and we’d all see it on Saturday mornings or afterschool? That doesn’t happen anymore. Millennials playing the video games during the week more than any other age group — they want our dollars. There’s so many places to see new games, Game Awards, Tik Tok, during a commercial of another mobile game, suggestions on Steam, and Origin platforms. In my opinion, there’s way too many games out for us to be on the same page like we were with Smash or Crash Bandicoot. They want to reach us right where we are, but now for other games. I think it’s stuff like car insurance, Mesothelioma.. oh sorry, the green Ketchup? Covid? I’m not sure what the commercials will be. They did say, they’d give the ad revenue to developers. I like that idea, but I would like to see what it looks like in game. Those mobile ads aren’t doing it for me. I love mobile games, but constantly sending me to the Play Store is whack!
This is what I think the ads will look like
The problem I have with Netflix adding advertisements to their shows/movies is quality and redundancy. While watching a high definition series Bloodhounds, the series about boxers taking on a loan shark; I see a low budget commercial. You know when you hear a song, but it sounds old. So you’re not sure if you heard a forgotten song or a new song? That’s what it’s like watching Netflix with ads. I thought an early 2000s Red Lobster resurfaced. By the way, Bloodhounds — so good!
The next issue of redundancy — why are you showing me the same Draft King commercial? I understand Draft King gave them a lot of money for advertising. One, DK needs to invest money into making commercials. Two, Netflix please get their target audience correct. Everything Netflix show I watched had DK commercials.
Sometimes, it doesn’t feel like we get the commercials we want. When I watch King of the Hill on Hulu I get Progressive insurance commercials. Well, ok, King of the Hill was for an older audience, but ya’ll know the kids was watching it. Or while watching The Amazing World of Gumball why didn’t I get Nerf commercials? Or the latest toy? Us Millennials know the car insurance we’re using, we do research, it’s shoved in our fast. But toys?! That’s what we want. Kids ‘R’ Us ain’t came back. We don’t want the toys they selling in GameStop. If ya’ll have to advertise in games, please let us see stuff we want. And yes, pay the devs.
